Headlines

We had another great weekend in the Snowies, cold nights, crisp mornings and sunny days - unfortunately no rain .Had plenty of good reports back in with most anglers commenting on the great condition of the fish.The fishing on the lakes just seems to get better and better. Remember to call in to the store for a cuppa on your way through or home and we'll update any further details on the day

Flyfishing

Rivers:- Please Note that from the 1st of May the regulations on the Eucumbene and Thredbo Rivers change. You may only take 1 trout per day over 50cm in these rivers, from this date, till they close completely at the end of the June long weekend. The Eucumbene River upstream of the flying fox and all tributaries of the Eucumbene River are also totally closed during this period.ONLY TWO MORE WEEKS ON THE THE RIVERS TO GO !

Make the most of the good conditions while you can before the rivers close on the 13th of June.There's still a little dry fly activity about on the upper sections on the Thredbo river, Moonbah, Gungahlin and Murrumbidgee rivers.With the warmest time of day giving you the most likely shot at a hatch of caddis or midge.Patterns worth having include elk hair caddis and stimulators.We really need some reasonable rain before we'll see any activity on the spawn run. Once the browns do go ,it will be all nymphs and glo bugs with indicators.I predict we'll see some more monsters turn up after such good conditions on the lakes over the couple of seasons.If your still after that elusive double figured brown this could be the year. 

Lake Eucumbene:- There have been a few fish sneaking around the river mouth up at Providence , but we really need some good rain to get the browns into gear.There have been some nice rainbows however down around the Buckenderra / Middling bank end, with fish to 2kgs being taken.Patterns worth having in your box include Wooly buggers, Fuzzy wuzzies, Craig's night times, Tiahapy ticklers and lumo baby dolls.Remember to up your tippet after dark to atleast 8lb as there's always a chance of a BIG one at this time of year.

Jindabyne:- Jindabyne has really fished well over the last few weeks. With good weed beds in many areas there are plenty of fish moving around in close after dark. Most areas in the lake are producing fish. Best flies have been muddler's, woolly bugger's, Lumo baby doll's, and fuzzy wuzzy's

Trolling  

Eucumbene:- Continues to fish well with plenty of good reports back in after the weekend.Both leadline and flatlines have been producing fish with the cooler surface temperatures.The best fishing has been down the bottom of the lake well away form the main river in-flows where the fish all appear to have lock jaw waiting for rain. The rainbows are in peak condition and averaging around the 1kg mark, feeding heavily on daphnia in the open water. Consistent lures include Tasmanian Devils in Cols 55, 72, Y82 & Y62, Our own Alpine Cobra's in the Alpine Attractor, Black hole and Alpine Special patterns, Rebel crickhoppers and crawfish,Rapala Jointed shad raps, ultra deep Merlins , Stump Jumpers and RMG Scorpions & Poltergeist.

Jindabyne:- Best reports have been down around the islands in front of the main township and East Jindabyne.Both flatlines and up to 3 colours of lead line are worth running with the same lure patterns as mentioned above.

Jamie Ley from Canberra caught this beautiful atlantic salmon trolling with his family on lake Jindabyne Sunday morning at the Kalkite end.They also picked up a nice rainbow flat lining with Tassies in Col 89.

Shane Duffy (pictured above), Tony Green and Ron Kuhna from Wollongong trolled lake Eucumbene out from Providence over 3 days for 27 rainbows averaging 1kg and three browns to 2.5kgs.All fish where taken on flatlines with Tassie's in cols 55,50 & Y05. 

*Trevor & Warren from "The Woolly bugger's" in Sydney trolled out form Old Adaminaby with both flatlines and leadlines with Tassie's in Col 36,43 and Y82 for 23 rainbows to 1.5kgs - commenting it was one of the best trips they had,had in a long while.

Baitfishing

Some excellent reports from Lakes Eucumbene and Jindabyne over the last few weeks. Power bait in orange, rainbow and lemon twist were the main fish takers.The best rig through winter is combining scrub worms with a Power bait dropper (pictured below).This rig has really proven itself over the last few seasons, with both options you really have it covered.Power bait naturally floats, so the distance you make your dropper is the distance you can expect your Power bait to be above the bottom. This means that fish will find your bait a lot quicker even if you have cast into weeds. If they don't eat the Power bait they have found your main bait a lot quicker. The hook is important when fishing with Power bait and we get a special "single egg" pattern in from Gamakatsu just for the job - which has a short shank and ultra wide gape. Feel free to ask us to go over the rig next time your in if still unsure.

#Please note that we haven't been able to secure any more bardie grubs and will let you know once we can find a supplier. 

Kieran 13yrs & Michael Vecchi 12 yrs fished with their parents at Seven Gates on Eucumbene with grubs and Powerbait for 6 rainbows averaging 1kg.

#Funny story also came back in form Alan Latimer from the Canberra Game fishing club , who had their annual "SOBA" ( Silli Old Bastards Association ) weekend up at Old Adaminaby.Alan hooked a nice rainbow while bait fishing at Yens bay, only to have a pelican snatch his fish mid-fight.The pelican then lost the fish when it managed to jump out of it's mouth with some help from Alan's pulling.The boys then had to deter the pelican with some stones to finally allow Alan to land the fish - being a nice rainbow.Shame you didn't have a video camera boys .Eleven anglers in their group actually did very well over the three days landing 30 nice rainbows averaging around the kilo mark all on Powerbait

Powerbait Dropper Rig

Best areas on Eucumbene include: Middling bank, Frying pan, Seven Gates, Yens bay, Breamar bay ,Providence around the Eucumbene River Mouth and along the dam wall at Eucumbene Cove.

Best area's on Jindabyne include: The clay pits in front of town, Hatchery bay, Hayshed bay and Kalkite.
