Headlines
The hot weather has abated a little this week with some good rain in the last few days, which will have helped to top up the rivers. There has been some excellent dry fly fishing on the rivers and some top trolling on the lakes. Mudeyes have been moving in the lakes and the fish are starting to zone in on them. This weekend is lining up to be a great one after the rain.
Remember to call in for a cuppa or cool water on your way through next trip !
Fly-fishing
Rivers:- The high country rivers continue to fish very well with numerous reports of hot dry fly action on both rainbows and browns. The Eucumbene and thredbo have been great and any of the smaller high country streams will produce at present. Long leaders, light tippets and small flies are the go. Local guide Paul Bourne from Snowy Monaro Fly Fishing, reported that he had a client catching fish on dries in the rain on Monday. Just goes to show you can catch fish even under adverse conditions. Hoppers are becoming increasingly more numerous so it would be worth searching with a hopper during the day.Evening rises have been good with some of the bigger fish moving on dark.
Flies worth having in your box include Royal Wulffs, Humpy's , Stimulators, Hoppers, Adams, duns, Foam beetles, Klinkhammers, Elh hair caddis and a selection of bead head nymphs.
Lake Eucumbene:- As in the rivers there are more and more hoppers starting to show up on the water and the fish have been starting to clue in on them. Steep banks with deep water are well worth a look during the day with fish being polaroided for those putting in the time.There have been some very nice browns showing up down around the Buckenderra / Middling bank ,Frying pan and Seven Gates area ,with fish being found in just about all the good soaks. Other areas worth trying are Waiunui, Collingwood and Coppermine Bays.
The windlane fishing has plenty of potential with lanes that have stretched from Waiunui to Brookwood! If you have a boat you should be out there drifting with a beetle, black and peacock spider or small hopper. The mudeye fishing has also picked up after dark with some nice browns showing up well into the night. If you put the time in during the early hours of the morning you have every chance of hooking a thumper, with good browns cruising right into the shallows searching for yabbies.
Patterns worth having in the box include Black and Brown Beetles, Daves Hopper, Rubber Hopper, Olive Scruffy's, Muddlers,Hi-Vis mudeyes,Fuzzy's & Woolly Buggers.
Lake Tantagara :- Has been pretty quite with falling lake levels - and still no reports ?
Lake Jindabyne:- There have been some good rainbow getting caught in the weedy bays at Jindabyne this week. The better fishing has been late and early on Wooly Buggers and Muddler Minnows with the occasional brown turning up as well. Best areas have been Hatchery and Hayshed bays, Creel Bay, and Rushes Bay.
Trolling
Eucumbene:- The trolling really has been great on Eucumbene over the last few months with some great rainbows & browns coming in. Both leadline and flatlines have been producing fish with the cooler surface temperatures.The best fishing has been down the bottom of the lake well away from the main river in-flows. The rainbows are in peak condition and averaging around the 1kg mark, feeding heavily on daphnia in the open water, while the better browns have been in close around teh clay yabby banks. Consistent lures include Tasmanian Devils in Cols 36,89,55, 72,S12, Y82 & Y62. Our own Alpine Cobra's in the Alpine Attractor, Black hole , Lime spider and Alpine Special patterns, Rebel crickhoppers and crawfish,Storm Hot N Tots , ultra deep Merlins,Stump Jumpers,RMG Scorpions & Poltergeist AND Rapala Jointed Shad Raps & minnows.

Jindabyne:- Better reports this week, with the best area's being up around the Thredbo river mouth at around Waste Point and the eastern shoreline around Sid's Bay . Fishing a mixture of small minnows like RMG Scorpions, Merlins & Attacks along with Tassies in just about all the "Yellow Wing", as well as our own Alpine Cobra's in the Lime Spider and Alpine Special colours producing the most fish.
Baitfishing
The baitfishing has been great,with some beautiful browns starting to come in over the last few weeks. Just about all the main baits have been taking fish.Scrub worms fished in conjunction with a Powerbait dropper still provingto be a popular rig ( Pictured below ).Power bait naturally floats, so the distance you make your dropper is the distance you can expect your Power bait to be above the bottom. This means that fish will find your bait a lot quicker even if you have cast into weeds. If they don't eat the Power bait they have found your main bait a lot quicker. The hook is important when fishing with Power bait and we have a special NEW "circle hook" pattern from Mustad just for the job - which hooks them for you ! Feel free to ask us to go over the rig next time your in if still unsure. The mudeye fishing has also been pretty good over the last month and should only improve as things warm up.The best way to fish mudeyes is with a running bubble rig (Pictured Below ).
Best baitfishing areas have been Seven Gates at Eucumbene and Kalkite at Jindabyne.

Best areas on Eucumbene include: Middling bank, Frying pan, Seven Gates, Yens bay, Breamar bay ,Providence around the Eucumbene River Mouth and along the dam wall at Eucumbene Cove.
Best area's on Jindabyne include: The clay pits in front of town, Hatchery bay, Hayshed bay and Kalkite.
